Son is like a brother to Tin, and through many life chapters in different cities, they have come full circle and found themselves back in Charlotte close to their families. Fu and Tin were both on the Charlotte Catholic high school football team, where Tin was nicknamed the "Vietnamese Rudy." Fu is one of the only original Charlotteans around, being that he was born and raised in Charlotte. Fu has been like a part of Tin’s family for a long time, even working at the family grocery store side by side with Tin. Shane is often referred to as Matthew McConaughey by Cat’s friends and family who visit the South. The movie “A Time To Kill” is often referenced after people meet him from California. Tin credits Esteban with truly introducing him to Mexican culture, which came in handy as Cat is really Mexican in a Vietnamese body. Perhaps no one knows more about the beginnings of Tin's relationship with Cat, than Esteban. Tin subjected to Esteban to endless hours of musings about Cat from the very beginning. For the last decade their lives have overlapped in a number of fateful ways, and this path has continued now that Anna is also an East Coast transplant. Perhaps no one knows more than Anna the long tale of how Cat and Tin came to be. Anna is very dear to Cat, and they both ‘get’ each other. No matter what transitions Cat goes through in life, Cat knows that Anna will always make room for her with very little fuss, and that means a lot to someone like Cat. Anna is both Cat’s hand-me-up/hand-me-down girlfriend when it comes fashion. Anna grew up in the Central Valley, and currently works in labor and government in D.C. The moment Anna met Cat’s father months before he passed, he told her she had a “smart face”. Cat met Katrina 9 years ago in Mexico City. Cat has been known to compliment Katrina with, “you look tall today” and Katrina has been known to do the same for Cat. Cat loves Katrina’s interesting sense of humor as well as her ability to always make Cat laugh at herself. Katrina loves a good time, and is great at throwing themed parties. Like most of her people, she also sings pretty well. Cat distinctly remembers her graduation at her parents house, where she and her family broke out in song much like the Vontraps. Alicia is a ray of sunshine, and has been known to save Cat from difficult life situations. “Alicia is a true dear, and makes everyone feel warm and fuzzy” says Cat. Although Alicia can often be found confused about what had just happened, she always figures it out eventually because she is the Maestra. Alicia has recently shown a great fascination for ethnic garbs. Alicia loves the color purple and can be spotted on April 12th in a purple ao dai. Cat was drawn to Debbie's warmth in that Debbie has always been the type to discreetly take care of others. At 19 when times were rough for Cat, Debbie left a $50 check in Cat’s room after sensing that she was low on money. Cat noticed it long after Debbie left, along with the note instructing Cat to only buy her school books with it. That is kind of friend Debbie has always been. Cat loves Debbie like a sister, and can’t wait to see Maki (Debbie’s daughter) grow up. Debbie is married to her husband Liku, and they live in Oakland, California. Even with not seeing each other for years at a time due to Cat's traveling, Misgana and Cat always pick up where they left off. Misgana was born in Addis Ababa, and came to California for high school. She lives in Oakland, and will be getting married to her fiancé, Misikir, in May. They quickly got closer over many shenanigans that took place at Dianna's apartment in El Cerrito. Cat loves Dianna's laugh, her drive, her heart, and her beautiful soul. Over the years, she has become a favorite with Cat’s little sister Maria, and her brother Joe. Cat also does not mind the selfies Dianna posts on facebook either. Dianna grew up in Los Angeles. Cat used to hang out at Doan’s apartment often, as she tried to escape her life as a dorm employee. Although both had very different upbringings (Doan is Vietnamese from SoCal and Cat Vietnamese from Norcal), somehow they overcame these differences and bonded over laughs, food, and much more. Doan is much like a sister to Cat, and has been there for Cat through many pivotal years in her life. They have many inside jokes and are known to randomly laugh at things that they can't even explain. Doan works for the SF Bar Association and is married to Jason. Cat’s father loved Asija’s laugh and even as a very serious non-joking man, he would often tell Asija knock-knock jokes to get her going. Cat first spotted Asija in their dorm orientation in 1999. Since then, they grew a friendship and have many stories of living together for much of college. Cat considers Asija one of the most solid people she knows, and although much more calm and sensible than Cat, somehow they are a good balance together. Asija’s presence makes a happier more light-hearted Cat. Asija is a special education teacher and is married to Johnny. They live San Francisco where Cat has been known to crash often over the last decade. Something deeper than the fact that they were both from Sacramento. They would soon learn that although they had left the 916 village, a deeper village connection still remained. Cat and Tam's families are of the same village in Vietnam (Đông Xuyên) – which is not just a village, but rather an identity and unit. Their grandpas even spent time in jail together in the early 1900s. Tam "gets" Cat, and Cat "gets" Tam in a way that is always surprising but makes perfect sense. Tam is a beautiful human being but don't be fooled, she gangsta. Tam is married to Arthur, and both work as attorneys in San Francisco. She has been a tremendous influence on Tin and has inculcated in him a deep sense of compassion and service for others as well as an entrepreneurial spirit. Tin's mother splits her time living in Charlotte and Viet Nam. He splits his time in Charlotte and Viet Nam. She and Cat are like best friends, and they love hanging out together. Maria is also very caring. When Cat asks Maria for something, she never asks why, at least not before she says yes first. Cat trusts Maria with her life. Maria is married to David Dobkin, who is like Cat’s white brother. When Cat moved to the US from London, Mary was only 1 years old and Cat remembers feeding her, cutting her hair, and teaching her to walk. At that point, their sisterhood was set. Mary is one of the most beautiful, resilient, and sweet family members that Cat has, and she will always do what she can to help others. Cat is so proud of who Mary is. Joe is very dear to Cat, and he is one of the most important men in her life. He is not only funny and sharp, but he also is fiercely loyal. Ann is married to Stephen, and they are expecting their first child in June. Ann works in international development, and Stephen is a psychiatrist. In Cat's first year at Berkeley, she noticed her floor mates would receive ‘care packages’ in the mail. Like most first generation college students, this was pretty normal for Cat not to expect one of her own . But one day she received a mailslip in her box. Although she thought it was a mistake much to Cat’s surprise, Theresa had sent her a care package just to make sure she filled any gaps in Cat’s college experience.
